To evaluate the efficacy of an egg membrane supplement-based treatment, a pilot study was conducted in 30 subjects (54.56 ± 2.25 years, 52% women) with known symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee and/or hip, with a score baseline in pain of at least 2, in the WOMAC index (The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index).
Treatment consisted of taking one 300 mg capsule once a day in the morning, accompanied by water or fruit juice, for 50 days. Patients agreed to replace current pain-relieving medications for the duration of supplementation with egg membrane supplementation, starting after a washout period (time needed to eliminate the influence of previous treatment) of 7 days.
The use of ibuprofen and paracetamol as a rescue option for pain relief was allowed, if necessary. Of the initial patients, 10 did not complete the study because they did not comply with the WOMAC questionnaire, so they were not included in the analysis.
Statistical analysis (ANOVA) showed a significant decrease in pain, stiffness and an improvement in function. Focusing on comparisons between baseline and different endpoints, a significant and gradual decrease in pain was observed from the first 10 days of egg membrane supplement intake, up to almost a 50% decrease in pain. pain at the end of the study. The participants (age 44.3 ± 3.01 years, 86% men), 15 runners with joint disorders, experienced a gradual and significant improvement in their joint disorders after treatment with pure egg membrane supplement, with effects evident from the first 10 treatment days.
